The first week or so of October has traditionally been the time when the Creative Knitting Retreat class with Sandy De Master and Mary Germain is scheduled, along with the Open Knit Studio time. As it turns out, this year was no different…except in many ways. Each group was small in numbers (but not in projects!), with plenty of distance within the studios. The usual non-knitting activities like the fashion show, group dinners and attendance at Columbus Day weekend events around the island were put on hold for another time. We missed seeing so many of our friends, as we have throughout the season, but know that we will see you all again when the time is right.
While the knitters were here, the fall colors grew better each day. It seems the oranges and yellows are especially prevalent this year. We’ve heard the term “forest bathing” and it certainly feels like being bathed in gold as you walk or drive around the island.
From morning until sunset, rain or shine, the colors have been extra-special this year.
We’re crossing our fingers they’ll continue to brighten our days through the rest of October!

The beauty of nature on Washington Island is a sight to behold! We have never been to a class in the fall. We thought spring was the best time to come. When all is said and done, any time is the BEST TIME on Washington Island.
I just finished knitting a hat this afternoon. How can I get a pattern for the one in the picture? It is exquisite!
All the best to all of you at Siever’s. I still wear my denim jacket and advertise for you every chance I can!

Hi Karen, We almost think fall is the best, but then again, we think every season is the best! This year the colors are outstanding. The hat pattern you’re referring to is Katie’s Kep, the Shetland Wool Week 2020 free pattern. It is available for download at https://www.shetlandwoolweek.com/free-knitting-pattern/. We’re carrying the Jamieson & Smith 2-ply wool, so if you needed any colors, just let us know. Take care, Carolyn

Oh the beauty! Thanks for all the color and photos!
Washington Island is such a wonderful place. You people kinda help too!!
Carolyn Foss says
Thanks, Marah! Every place we turn, the colors are great. There isn’t enough space to share all the views. It was great to see you a few weeks ago. Take care, Carolyn

The island colors are glorious! Thanks for your wonderful photos, Carolyn. And the knitted pieces are beautiful. I’m glad for those participants who were able to come this year to the Creative Knitting Retreat with Sandy and Mary. It’s so much fun, which heaven knows we need these days!
Carolyn Foss says
Thanks, Lynn! We’re glad you were able to come for weaving and Washington Island time, too! The wind is bringing the colors down around our feet…just lets in a little more of the blue sky! Take care, Carolyn
Gerri Barosso says
Thanks for the pictures! Beautiful! Fall has been just spectacular around here as well. Here, however, it is missing the beauty of the camaraderie of Sievers!
Carolyn Foss says
Hi Gerri,
I’ve heard from others around the Midwest that their fall colors have been wonderful, too. They are definitely a bright spot when needed! We’re looking forward to the day when we can combine it with students happily working away in the studios! Take care, Carolyn
