In our last two classes, Deflected Double Weave and Pop-Up-Book in a Box, there were many opportunities for double takes. From the woven projects to the multiple books and boxes completed, it was hard to believe on first glance all that you were seeing.
In the Deflected Double Weave class, taught by Judith Yamamoto with assistant Lynn Novotnak, students jumped into the realm of handwovens that have two-sided designs and floating threads that, when finished, can “deflect” into curves. What an interesting weave structure that requires many second looks to see the intricacies!

At the same time, Nancy Akerly was teaching her Pop-Up-Book-in-a-Box class, which combines two great things: cartonnage (box making) and handmade books. The class allowed for extra time and students made additional books and a variety of box designs, several of which had lids, moving parts or drawers. How could you not do a double take, watching those books pop up from their boxes?

So far, the first part of September feels a lot like August, with very few signs that fall is approaching. No double takes yet when it comes to leaves changing, chilly mornings or flocks of geese overhead. That will all come in good measure..on “Island time”.

At least you don’t have hurricanes.
Hi Mary,
I hope you and yours are doing all right! I didn’t realize Hawaii was experiencing another disaster. Too many in the last few years!
Take care,
Carolyn
Thank you Carolyn.
From my island to yours.
Aloha!
Mary
