Fostered by basketry

July 5, 2026 By Carolyn Foss

It may seem so simple, weaving reed lengthwise and crosswise into a basket, but it takes a watchful eye and practiced hand to get it just right. Ask any basketmaker!

The students in the 3-day Beginning Splint-Woven Basketry class had two experienced basketmakers guide them in weaving three baskets, starting with a Market Basket. Jeanette Biederman and assistant instructor Yvonne Kett led the class in creating baskets to fill with memories (as well as the many things one can put or carry in a basket).

With a quick turnaround of a few hours after the beginners had finished, Jeanette started her intermediate (and beyond) class, Splint-Woven Basketry: Independent Study. Here, busy fingers turned imagination into reality, in all manner of color and design.

Can a person have too many baskets? We don’t think so! Each of these baskets earned many oohs and ahhs.

Baskets often hold food (bread, muffins, pies, a casserole dish, crackers or snacks). Then why not incorporate that concept into each class and enjoy both basketmaking and meals as a group? We’re sure the students wouldn’t mind if you use their list to plan your own lunches and dinners, if you needed a few ideas.

Some in this Independent Study class and the one coming up in August have shared 20 or more basket classes together. With both the beginners and returning students, this proved another great week of new and continuing friendships, food and fun, fostered by basketry.

Hi Bev! The beginners’ baskets all turned out great and it’s always fun to see some of the more intricate designs the intermediate and advanced basketmakers are working on. Keep weaving, Carolyn

So true, Connie! We’re glad you’ve made (and have) some of your own Jeanette Biederman-instructed baskets!

We agree, Robin! There was a great combination of quality and quantity of basketmaking over these two classes! Looking forward to seeing you in class in August!
