Working yarn

October 16, 2026 By Carolyn Foss

Working yarn is a knitting term referring to the strand of yarn that is connected to your project on the needles. Last week in the Creative Knitting Retreat with Mary Germain and in the Open Knitting Studio, there were many knitters working yarn in wondrous ways.

Finished fashions to wear and show, projects in process, ideas and inspiration, and friendships and fibers were all knit together during the time here.

A variety of Fair Isle, colorwork, lace, ethnic, three-dimensional and textural knitting along with good old reliable simple garter stitch and stockinette were in the works during the week. Some projects had used yarn taken off the stash swap table from the previous year and some came from trips taken halfway across the world.

For additional knitting projects which were modeled in a fashion show, see our Facebook page or Instagram for our posts dated October 9.

Working yarn…a great way to spend a week in October while being surrounded by Washington Island’s fall colors.

Carolyn, It was so good to see you and your mom two weeks ago. I feel so blessed that you both happened to be there when I came. Sievers has provided me with so many hours of learning and pleasure over the years (not to mention dozens of hand made gifts for family and friends). Thank you for enhancing my life.

Thanks, Karen! It was so great to see you. We hope to keep the leaves on the trees as long as possible. The past few days into next week will be the peak of color. Truly our favorite season on the Island! Looking forward to seeing you again, Carolyn
