Three classes: Part one

August 9, 2022 By Carolyn Foss

With three classes in session during the first full week of August (Finding our Way: A Dyeing Journey with Stephanie Robertson and two classes, Beads! Glorious Beads! and Embroidery: Basics & Beyond taught by Francie Broadie), there were just too many fun things to show in just one post. Stephanie’s class had a 5-day or 7-day option, giving students the ability to extend their time in the studio and continue to experiment with silk screening, mono-printing and direct painting. There are opportunities for rust and indigo dyeing, shibori, ice dyeing, sun printing and every year, new explorations. It is so exciting to see the stages of the printed fabrics with new layers of colors and designs being added each time […]

Three at a time

August 14, 2021 By Carolyn Foss

We’re back on schedule now with this post which covers three classes held in early August; Beading: Composing Components with Francie Broadie, the Beadwork Alumni Studio and Finding Our Way: A Dyeing Journey with Stephanie Lewis Robertson. We were very happy to welcome Francie and this new class to our 2021 schedule. Francie first came to Sievers in 2009 as a student in a Diane Fitzgerald beadwork class and has gone on to take many more beadwork as well as several fabric printing and dyeing classes here. She taught a workshop at the Sievers Gathering in 2018 and was scheduled to offer Composing Components in 2020. This was another new class that was long overdue! Students worked on creating rings, […]

1000 Words

August 16, 2019 By Carolyn Foss

The adage, “a picture is worth 1000 words” is the theme for this post featuring photos from our early August companion classes, Diane Fitzgerald’s “Beading: Inspiration from Everywhere” and Stephanie Lewis Robertson’s “Making Your Mark: A Fabric Journey”. As it turns out, one thousand words equals about two full pages of writing. We will forego all those words and share photos from the classes instead. First, just a bit about each class. The beaders had selected a theme that appealed to them personally, researched it, then developed a concept and based on that, created beadwork in class. In Making Your Mark, students used simple silk screening, direct painting on fabric, dyeing, block printing and more to create designs on cloth. […]

Without Boundaries

August 11, 2018 By Carolyn Foss

After learning the basics, there’s no boundaries to what you can create.  Experimenting builds new opportunities and that was definitely part of our last two classes. We start by continuing with a few more fabrics; direct painted, dyed, printed and screened from Stephanie Robertson’s Making Your Mark class.    A family tree branched out on one piece, and after preparing the first stage of this mountain scene, it was definitely time to sit back and admire it with feet up!     An idea proposed by one of Stephanie’s students and carried out in class this year was to hand-dye cotton that could be used in the Washington Island-made Quilts of Valor.  Each student participated to create this array of fabrics for these meaningful quilts.   […]

Express yourself

August 3, 2018 By Carolyn Foss

There are so many ways to express yourself.  Count our first two classes in August, Basketry: Covered Coiling with Lynn Schuster and Making Your Mark: A Fabric Journey with Stephanie Lewis Robertson among them! By completely covering the core material with various yarns and expanding or decreasing the spiral core while constructing a basket was the method used in this class.  As Lynn related to the students, the basket will tell you what it wants as far as its shape, rim and embellishment.          The students commented on the relaxed and meditative-type atmosphere that was inherent in the wrapping and stitching of their baskets.    Expressing yourself and telling your own story through fabric is the basis of Stephanie’s fabric printing and dyeing class.  Experimenting with […]

Compare and contrast

August 8, 2017 By Carolyn Foss

Intricate designs in Japanese Temari was the focus of Judie Yamamoto’s recent three-day class.  Sorted into categories such as “Complex 8” and “Complex 10”, students learned how to create the lush swirls and precise motifs on these elegant Temari.  Lines carefully measured and marked across the circumference of the ball provided the starting points for the decorative stitching.           At the same time, Stephanie Robertson’s Making Your Mark: A Fabric Journey class was in session.  Compare the use of color, the variety of designs and the joy of the process.  In contrast, no measured and precise lines while dyeing.  Instead, the wonderful gift of experimentation and surprise (generally happy surprise) with each unveiling.  If the original concept for the fabric doesn’t appear, there’s always indigo for over-dyeing!   […]
