Winter on Washington Island has meant gentle snowfalls, zero and below temperatures, ice formations and a lake effect snow total that topped 16″ within 24 hours. Some melting happened now and then, but the ground has stayed white and the ice in the harbors thick enough for shanty fishing for some time now.
From December through today, our winter time lapse looks like this…
One of our favorite parts of winter is hearing from all of you on and after February 1st. As of today, we have 228 registrations. Wow, and thank you! What a wonderful response to mark our 40th season!
Soon, the whites, greys and blues of winter will give way to the greens of spring and summer and we’ll be seeing your sunny faces!

Wonderful photos telling the Washington Island winter story. Thank you.
Question: how can I tell if a class I am interested in still has room?
Carolyn Foss says
Thanks, JoAnne! To answer your question, through 4pm today (Wednesday) we are taking all registrations. After that, if any class is “overfilled” we will do a lottery for that class. It generally affects only a few classes. You can always email or call to ask and of course, can send in a registration anytime.

It was cold! Lake Michigan was making steam. P.S. Fishing has been pretty good!

Thanks, Pat. We are very cozy here in the office, looking out over the bright white snow banks and all the meandering deer tracks.

Thank you Carolyn! Beautiful.
PS. Next time you check out ice on Detroit Harbor, see if our dock is still in place.

Thanks, and will do!
