December certainly made itself known, including here on Washington Island, with at least 10″ of snow, strong winds, power outages and disrupted ferry trips.
Sunday may have been the day to stay indoors, but Monday morning offered the opportunity to capture some pristine woodland scenes and evidence of continued high water levels.
December finds us in the office, putting together all the details for the 2020 Schedule of Classes since in less than two months, it’s registration time!

Beautiful but really glad I’m only looking at pictures!!!
Carolyn Foss says
There’s a lot of truth in that! It is slowly melting, by the way.
Barb Wolfe says
Gorgeous pictures, Carolyn. You have such a good eye. You help us appreciate the beauty of nature in all its forms. Thank you! And happy holidays to everyone there!

I’m ready Marah!
Karen from Minnesota says
Even in the summer it is so beautiful on the island. But capturing the stillness in these pictures gives it a serene beauty that can only come when the snow arrives and the temperatures plummet. Thank you for keeping us part of the island by sharing these amazing pictures!
Carolyn Foss says
I love sharing the Island’s beauty, in all times of the year. Winter certainly is special. I was able to basically park my car in the middle of the road for some of these photos! Thanks, Karen for your lovely comments!
Barb Gallagher says
Hi to all
With 10″ of snow you win!!
These photos are awesome!! I don’t recognize the location of the bridge. Hmmm… See you soon.
Carolyn Foss says
Hi Barb, And it could have been 12″! (I’m sure someone here recorded just a bit more than 10″.) The bridge is a footbridge near the Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum. Because of the high water this year, they’ve roped it off. The water from the Ridges is almost up to the parking area there. Take care! Carolyn
Kathe Hoffmann says
Stunning photos Carolyn! The last one especially took my breath away! Must have been lots of trees down… It will be interesting to see what this winter brings to the island! Thank you for sharing your Wonderland!
Carolyn Foss says
There were a lot of trees down. Some people, including Cindra, didn’t have power for more than a day. The north side of the Island by Boyer’s Bluff was especially hit hard. (Didn’t take a drive there…yet.) Many people are worried about ice damage with the high water levels. Some wild photos of Ephraim and other spots in the county keep appearing. Take care and be cozy! Carolyn
Colleen Howland says
Awesome photography – what a wonderful place to be snowed in! Thanks for sharing.
Carolyn Foss says
Thank you, Colleen! There’s nothing like a snow day. (Until you have to clean it up!) Happy Holidays to you and Dave from all of us at Sievers.
Peg Schmidt says
Stunning photos Carolyn! We miss being there and looking forward to 2020.
Carolyn Foss says
Thanks, Peg! We hope to see you sometime this winter. With your permission, I could take a photo or two from your place. Happy Holidays, Carolyn
Elizabeth Thorpe says
You never cease to find beautiful images of Washington Island, no matter what season of the year.
The early snowfall makes for some postcard perfect photos. Thank you for sharing the beauty of
your “island” with those of us all across the USA and perhaps outside of our nation too.
Merry Christmas to everyone at Sievers.
Carolyn Foss says
Thank you so much, Elizabeth. This was an exceptional photo opportunity and the scenes were too good not to share with everyone. Take care and Merry Christmas to you from all of us at Sievers!
Renee Elertson says
The island truly is a winter wonderland. I love your photography. We had similar weather here in Shawano on Sunday. Our electricity was out for 12 hours so it made for a very peaceful day. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and looking forward to the 2020 class schedule. Thanks for sharing your talent with us so we can enjoy the beauty of the island all year long.
Carolyn Foss says
Thanks, Renee! Sounds like we were in the same snow belt! Amazing how no power takes everything “back to the basics”. A nice change of pace, as long as you can keep warm. Merry Christmas to you and your family from all of us at Sievers!
Kathy Maki says
Beautiful photos. They should be framed. We also had a bad storm. We were out of power for 74 hours and others were much longer. Thank you for sharing beautiful pictures of the island. I always look forward to my week on the Island.
Kathy Maki
Carolyn Foss says
Oh my gosh, Kathy! Well, the UP always “takes the cake” when it comes to winter weather. I hope your loom is up and running and you can enjoy some winter weaving time. It will be good to see you again in 2020!
Eileen says
You capture the beauty of God’s creation ! Thank you for sharing the blessing. Hugs for all!
Carolyn Foss says

Oh, thank you, Carolyn, for bringing winter to Texas (at least visually!). Your pictures are truly spectacular. Each time I see an email from you, I can hardly wait to open it. I am reminded of a place our whole family has always loved, and as always, there are marvelous memories of Sievers.
Take care all.
Carolyn Foss says
Thank you so much, Mary! It looks like winter will be with us now for the long haul…single digits predicted for next week. Your comments warm our hearts! Happy Holidays to you and yours from all of us at Sievers.
