After a few warm days, we’re back to a typical Washington Island spring, which means temperatures in the 40’s, a northerly breeze and the need to keep our hats and gloves close by.
Recently, those who sponsor the annual Shetland Wool Week announced they are unable, again this year, to conduct an in-person event. Today they released their free Shetland Wool Week 2021 hat pattern. Last year’s Katie’s Kep was so well received, they asked the same designer, Wilma Malcolmson, to design the 2021 pattern. It is called Da Crofter’s Kep, honoring the people who work the land and care for livestock in Shetland.
We are offering these kits using Jamieson & Smith’s 2-ply jumper weight yarn for Da Crofter’s Kep. These are approximate matches (except for the “Oak” colorway) as not all of the exact shades of the other colorways are available in the Jamieson & Smith line. A total of seven balls are needed; two of the main color and one each of five others. Like the Katie’s Kep, if you want to make a second hat with similar colors, you can order an additional ball of any one of the secondary colors and use the leftovers from the first hat.

It’s only a little over six weeks until we begin our 2021 season of classes with an Open Quilt Studio, followed by Simply Scandinavian with Connie Westbrook, Shibori & Indigo Dyeing with Anne Landre and Beginning Weaving on a Floor Loom with Susan Frame. Currently, our enrollment for the season is 273 and many classes have waiting lists.
We are so excited to know that we will be seeing many of you again…it’s been too long!
