Blue led the way during the week of June 14-21, starting with Anne Landre’s Shibori & Indigo Dyeing class. Using the Japanese technique of resist-dyeing with the option of several indigo vats in a range of light, medium and dark intensities, students stitched, clamped or folded cotton, silk and linen fabrics and then dyed them for predicted (and surprising) results.
The blue sky each day of class seemed to be reflected directly into the fabrics. As Anne says, “Jump into the blue!”
Besides blue, all colors were incorporated in the scarves, table runners and twill samplers in Susan Frame’s Beginning Weaving class. Of the eight students, seven were new to Sievers and one had taken just one class previously, Basic Weaving in 1983.
Our first ever Beginning Weaving class was held June 25-29, 1979 with Mary Sue Fenner. Back then, the description read, in part, “…each teacher has their own best way of imparting their knowledge to the students. The best possible weaving techniques are taught with efficient warping combined with free use of color, texture and design for the beginning student.” It’s good to know the concept hasn’t changed since then! Coincidentally, all of our current Beginning Weaving teachers first came to Sievers as a student, whether in weaving or another subject. Over and over each one of them is described as “patient”, “a wealth of knowledge”, “helpful”, and “encouraging”. Susan certainly has all these traits and more!

I’m glad the blue on their hands showed through in the photograph. Everyone in class had those same blue fingernails and tint. They had great fun!

Love the Shibori class photos…..such beautiful patterns and color. I really enjoyed being in Anne’s class last summer, it was a true delight!
