Two weaving classes, Simply Scandinavian with Connie Westbrook and Rag Rug Weaving with Deb Sharpee, wrapped up our 44th season of classes with many yards of warp! We can think of no better way to finish classes than to have a studio full of weavers working at Sievers looms, the foundation of Sievers School.
Connie’s beautiful Scandinavian-inspired handwovens provided lots of possibilities for students’ class projects, focused on clean lines and simple designs. The class wasn’t only about weaving, it also included a tour of the Washington Island Stavkirke and a daily afternoon “Fika” break with treats. Last year we shared Connie’s delicious chocolate cake recipe, which made another appearance this year. We may try to obtain Tuesday’s special Swedish Tea Ring recipe for another time!
Most students chose to make a series of towels or table runners in cottolin and cotton, many with a Monk’s Belt pattern.
“Having great experiences learning, weaving and enjoying Washington Island” are some of the words Deb Sharpee uses to welcome students leading up to her Rag Rug weaving class. If you had to pick the perfect month to weave a rag rug, October would be at the top of the list. That being said, late October weather ruled the start of this class, with word going out the day before saying the Washington Island Ferry may run only two or three morning trips on Monday due to high northwest winds. With the advance notice, everyone arrived early and all were cozily in the studio at the start of class.
It’s great fun to see the diverse fabrics transformed into cut strips and woven into rugs, some curated and some randomly placed.
A square of tile and a shower curtain (see them in the far right photo) were the inspirations for these rugs.
As our 2022 season concludes, we thank Connie, Deb and each one of the instructors for all they bring to their students and for providing “great experiences learning, (fill in your favorite fiber art here), and enjoying Washington Island”. We continue to thank all of the Sievers students, past and present, for your ongoing friendships and for fostering your creative talents in our studios.
We’re looking ahead to more great experiences in 2023!
