While it’s still very much winter and with a fresh coat of snow, we’re sharing a few more views of Washington Island before the changeable month of March arrives.
From a 1997 Washington Island Archives program titled “What Do You Do in the Winter?”, host Jay Hagen noted that this question is usually asked in three parts. The first is, “Are you an Islander?”, then the second one is “Do you stay here year-round?” and of course, the third one is “What do you do in the winter?” One of his illustrations of life on Washington Island in the winter was this: “If you see a car go by in the winter, you probably know who it is and where they’re going. For instance, if you see Arbutus go by at ten o’clock at night, she’s obviously going to the post office and will be right back in about seven and a half minutes.”
He continued, “Winter is when someone asks ‘How are you?’ and listens while you tell them. When you can stay home for three days straight and enjoy the house you love. When you can do a crossword from start to finish, read a book from cover to cover and watch a two-hour movie without the phone ringing. Or you can go for a walk in a quiet snowfall, sit by the fire and fall peacefully asleep.”

There is no place like Washington Island. The serene quiet, those brilliant sunsets, the caring, creative people…..all make it one of a kind. As Cindra sang to us several years ago, “Once you’ve been on the Island, you’ll never be the same!” Amen!
Carolyn Foss says
Amen, indeed! We always appreciate your kind comments, Karen.

Hi Kathleen, We’re wondering what people in Arizona do in the summer? I hope you’ve asked around. Love from your fellow Sievers crew!

Jay, as printed on his calling card …philosopher, artist, entrepreneur, virtuoso! I may add, an inspiration, kind, thoughtful, and wonderful friend. He is missed. Thank you for remembering Jay.

Serenity and beauty are what attracts so many to the island; quiet is NOT a bad thing. It fosters reflection in the crazy world we live in. Although I have never lived on the island, I have visited many times in winter and I love winter on the island as much as summer. It’s just different. And Carolyn captures the essence of the island with her photos. Thank you for letting us live north of the tension line vicariously, Carolyn!
Carolyn Foss says
You describe this perfectly, Cindy! Despite the snow, cold and ice many Island residents relish the quietness of winter. It’s a good balance.
