The first touches of spring have arrived. Not only do the flower petals begin to open, but Washington Island begins to re-open with the change of season. Each year at this time, we like to share information about new businesses and events or changes to existing ones.
Starting with what’s new, there are new owners at Deer Run Golf Resort. Their plans are to open the Washington Island Biergarten, continue operating the golf course and lodging and make improvements on the property over time.
Next to the Albatross Drive-In, in a bright red building, the Island Popcorn Barn will feature gourmet popcorn this summer.
At the Death’s Door Fuel gas station on the road leading to and from the ferry dock, Percy’s Pantry will stock convenience store items and more.
Wis-Co Washington Island Coffee recently added a lunchtime grab-and-go sandwich selection to their menu, featuring a different choice each weekday.
Washington Island restaurants have recently opened again for the season or have added hours, including Jackson Harbor Soup & Sandwich, Hotel Washington, Red Cup Coffee House, the Point Grille and KK Fiske. Others will open closer to Memorial Day weekend.
The Trueblood Performing Arts Center schedule is now available, their first regular season since 2019. In addition, they’ll continue their “On the Green” series. Gathering Ground is getting the word out about the Saturday W.I. Farmers Market starting in June and are offering a Farm and Field Bike Tour again as well as other events, including two one-day classes at the Hotel Washington Studio.
At Sievers, the shop is coming together with all the beautiful handmade work sent by our students and teachers, plus yarns, books and fiber goodies of all kinds.
What’s not new but we love them all the more for it?
We love the blend of newness and familiarity around us, especially as we begin to see all of our Sievers friends (that’s you!) this season.

Thank you, Carolyn. Does Sievers ever have dry flat felting classes?
Carolyn Foss says
Hi Irene, We’ve had nuno-felting classes in the past, but don’t currently have any on the horizon. If you were thinking of needle-felting, sorry to say we haven’t offered any classes in that yet.

Thanks, Karen! Since the posting the trilliums are blooming, the leaves are unfurling and we’re surrounded by green. It feels so good! Take care, Carolyn
Eileen says

We’re looking forward to seeing you and “the girls”! The daffodils behind the studio should still be in bloom.
