April means ice and snow are retreating or only passing through. It also means preparations for the season ahead and for us, getting the shop and studios ready in anticipation of seeing all our Sievers friends again soon. Just eight weeks from now, the Washington Island Art Assocation’s Spring Open Workshop and our own first Open Quilt Studio will have already taken place.
By then we trust the ice and snow will be a distant memory!
We occasionally find old photos of Sievers in one or another of its previous identities. This is from a 1950’s advertisment. The cabin seen at the back left of the main building is the Teacher’s Cottage, before it was moved to its present location.
Although the Sievers Shop doesn’t keep regular hours until May, other seasonal businesses are opening this month, including Jackson Harbor Soup & Sandwich, Islandtime Essentials, The Weathered Fern and Fragrant Isle (on May 1st). They join the others, which have stayed open year-round, including Wis-Co, Mann’s Store, Mann’s Mercantile, Karly’s, KK Fiske, the Island Popcorn Barn and more.
April’s anticipations are uplifting!

Hi Eileen,
It was well beyond time for some Island photos! We’ve had a few warm days, so maybe some of that ice along the shore has melted.
We look forward to seeing you…anytime!! Carolyn

Where’s the island popcorn barn? I love popcorn, can’t believe I missed it!
Carolyn Foss says
Hi Sandy,
The Island Popcorn Barn is right next to (north of) the Albatross Drive-In and run by the same family. They opened last summer and stayed open on weekends during the winter. They ship, too!
Thanks for asking! Hope to see you this summer! Carolyn
