How much can we fit into the month of June? Plenty, as it turns out! We’ll have welcomed five classes since June 10, which we’ll visit in this post and the next.
For beginners and beyond, team teachers Kathy Broer and Judith Yamamoto have shared one or more new techniques during their Japanese Temari classes and this year, the focus was on Kikus and Triwings. In addition, for their main project, the students were challenged to use several shades of orange colors in each of the design motifs on their Temari.
It’s truly captivating to see all of the samples Kathy and Judie bring as inspiration for their students and there’s an added delight to see the looks of amazement from the companion class during the studio visit time.
Kathy’s progression with Temari is nothing short of remarkable. From taking a class with Judie here in 2016, she has gone on to pass Level 3 and be certified as a teacher with the Japanese Temari Association, advancing to the highest, or Master level. This was her fourth time team teaching a Temari class with Judie. Kathy first came to Sievers in 1989 for a Beginning Spinning class with Franie Philps. Since then, she’s taken 25 classes here, including quilting, marbling, polymer clay, basketry of all kinds, dyeing and handmade books. Her Temari, miniature books and Hardanger embroidery are sold in the Sievers Shop. Kathy is definitely another example of a “Sievers Achiever”!
What would we do without willow and willow basketry? Well, I don’t think we’ll ever find out, because we love its natural beauty and essence, along with its long history at Sievers! Jo Campbell-Amsler has been part of that history since coming as a student in 1981, and the class she offered this year gave students the opportunity to use rib-style techniques in up to four baskets.
Recognize one of the Willow Basketry students? Yes, Cindra was enjoying her first post-retirement Sievers class, re-connecting with her interest in willow basketmaking!
Lots of learning, lots of smiles!
Next, we’ll share a few peeks from last week with the third and fourth of our five groups: “Your Latest, Greatest Quilt” class with Ellen Graf and the Batik Alumni Studio, facilitated by Mary Jo Scandin.
There’s plenty more being made in June! Stay tuned for the next blog post.

I’m sooooo happy to see the faces of Sievers students and teachers! It makes my heart glad to see a photo of Cindra as a student. Taking Jo’s willow basketry class is on my bucket list!

Yes, it was a treat for us, too, to have her here for Jo’s class!

Love to see Cindra enjoying her retirement. Beautiful baskets by all! And those phenomenal Batik artists creative as always. I wish I was able to see all the quilts. A little birdie told me they were all beautiful. Sorry I missed the session.

Hi Pat, We’re sorry to have missed you, too, but we’re glad to know you’ll be coming later this year. Between the Batik Studio, quilting class and Temari, it seems all of your favorites were happening almost simultaneously! Take care and see you in September!

Congratulations Kathy Broer! Your work is absolutely fabulous.
