From a poem recited by our teacher in grade school days, we hold in our memories the words, “…September days are here, with summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.”
So far, this September has been exactly that.
With one class in session each week this month, we’ll be sharing September studio and island views in two blogs. We begin by featuring the classes Metalwork Jewelry Boot Camp with Kay Rashka and Double Weave with Judith Yamamoto, assisted by Lynn Novotnak.
From creating etched designs on metal with stamps or by hand, to cutting, forming, piercing and more, students in the Metalwork Jewelry Boot Camp made personalized textured art jewelry in this busy four-day class. Kay brings a ton (well, almost!) of tools and specialized equipment, plus a wide sample of her inspiring work. Besides the exciting and fun jewelry making, class extras included shared meals, music and more!
Double Weave allows you to weave multiple layers of fabric at the same time. Students started out with a sampler, a weaving-tool holder with pockets, to introduce the basics and explore the theory and techniques of double weave. Using pickup, images such as the heart or tree shown in the samples below, were woven into the finished pieces. Lots of layers can be seen in the first photo on the bottom row. That takes some engineering!
We’ve enjoyed “summer’s best of weather” for two weeks now. The geese are beginning to gather and the landscapes are turning golden, while the leaves start to give us a hint of what’s to come.
More weaving will finish out the remainder of September with classes in Navajo Weaving Techniques and Beginning Weaving on a Floor Loom. Look for those next time, along with more early fall views of Washington Island!
