We’ve had a busy start to August with five classes in session during the first ten days of the month. Beadweaving, and then Mixed Media Fiber Jewelry with Francie Broadie, Finding Our Way: A Dyeing Journey with Stephanie Lewis Robertson, Batik with Anne Landre and Coiled Basketry with Lynn Stracka Schuster. Let’s “take five” and see a little of what each class did during their time in the studios.
Francie Broadie’s Beadweaving: Lesser Known Stitches class allowed all levels to try beadweaving for the first time or to explore unfamiliar stitches, then in her Mixed Media Fiber Jewelry class, students created one-of-a-kind jewelry using fabric scraps, beads, found objects or pieces of old jewelry, upcycling and combining them in fun ways.
Five days never seems enough for Stephanie Robertson’s fabric dyeing class, so why not make it a full seven days for everyone? That’s just what we did, and this year’s class used all those days to the fullest, putting color on cloth. Direct painting, ice and incline dying, silk screening and rust dyeing were just a few ways to create personal expressions on fabric.
More dyes found their way onto fabric in the Batik class with Anne Landre. Designed for all levels but geared for beginners, students painted directly on fabric with wax or used copper stamps for designs. A multi-step process of waxing and dyeing results in the signature and universally appealing look of batik.
Lynn Schuster brings many sizes and shapes of her coiled baskets as inspiration for students, several of which are embellished with beadwork. Each of the students’ baskets had some special feature including an embellished lid, a crocheted edge finish, a two-color tweed effect and one made with handspun yarn. Good things and good memories are put into these small baskets!
We suggest you “take five” wherever and whenever you can!

Hello
I would like to place an order for just one of those beautiful sunsets. There is no other place on earth that has such a gorgeous display.
Thank you!

We agree, Karen, and we’re lucky to be able to see sunsets like that one within a five minute drive of pretty much anywhere on the island!

We could’ve had an entire post of just your class and all the coiled baskets! It was a wonderful, exciting and colorful start to the month!

Although we have been unable to visit Washington Island lately, seeing the photos, reading the comments brings me “back home” to the island; and, the best of past and prescious memories.

Hi Aina,
Those are the nicest words ever! Thank you so much! Hugs from all of us,
