Each year we’re delighted to have new items for the shop, both handcrafted artwork by our students and teachers and the wide variety of yarns, books and fiber art materials for makers. The Sievers Shop will officially open on Thursday, May 20 with hours of 10am – 4pm daily through October 31. At this time of year, we like to share information about any new businesses being established and changes to others. The W.I. Souvenir Hut (WISH) and Heart of a Gypsy shops are located side by side on Main Road in the former Island Café and Bread Company. For the fifth year in a row on Washington Island, a Quilts of Valor sewing event was held in the Sophie Studio. Coordinated by Ellen Graf, a total of 26 individuals were involved in the event during the last few days of March and early April. From their hands, ten quilt tops were completed, joined by three quilts that had been finished before the event began. They will be on display at the Washington Island Memorial Day Program before being awarded to recipients known and unknown by the Island makers. The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national non-profit whose mission is to create comforting and healing quilts for service members and veterans touched by war. A new look
As summer fades and the colors of fall start to show, new looks appear. A recent hike on Rock Island gave a glimpse into what is in store for us in the next two months. The trails went through a “forest” of ferns, past the Water Tower and steep views down the bluffs to the water below. Back on Washington Island and specifically at Sievers, there is a new look in the Sophie Studio. With just shy of 20 years on the roof, it was time to make a change, preventing any future problems with ice buildup and rain on and around the skylights.
