The fall and winter before, foundation was dug and poured, walls went up and the roof went on. (Before the walls and roof were up, snow needed to be shoveled off the concrete floor almost daily.)

With 20 years and well over 550 classes held within the walls of the Sophie Studio since May of 1996, the learning, laughter and sharing that has taken place inside is equally built into her.
For some things new…
The Island Café and Bread Company is open in a new location on Main Road, next to Mann’s grocery store. Featuring breakfast, lunch and toast menus, a pizzeria, coffee and other specialties, this remodeled space has been open from 6:30 am – 5pm daily for about a month. We’re looking forward to the opening of Jackson Harbor Soup and Sandwiches, just down the road near the Rock Island ferry landing. Indoor and outdoor seating, soup, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks and an inspiring view. Both offer Wi-Fi.

As you may know, the fine folks at the Sailor’s Pub have retired and will not be open this year. However, Le Petit Bistro at Fragrant Isle will be serving dinners this summer. Follow them at Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm. Hotel Washington re-opened for the season on May 18th. Their first week’s menu looked wonderful. To read more about what Hotel Washington is offering, click Hotel Washington & Studio.
Other upcoming Island ventures include a new location for Island Style, a “random and creative haven” (now across from the Albatross drive-in) and Pop’s Kettle Corn & More (just north of the Albatross).
In progress on your way to Washington Island is road and bridge construction work in Sturgeon Bay. The Bayview (highway) bridge is closed and a roundabout is being built along Hwy 42/57. Detours take you through downtown Sturgeon Bay, getting back on the highway before Hwy 42 and 57 branch off. These projects are expected to be finished by the July 4th weekend.
By then, another great summer season at Sievers will be well underway!
Karen O. from Minnesota says
I read every word of every publication you send my way. It’s a small way for me to feel like I’m on the island….learning and having a wonderful get-away. I will find out today whether or not I can sign up for one of the later classes. I meet with a surgeon in about an hour to find out what he can do to help my pain. I’m sure weaving on Washington Island would be good therapy!
Carolyn Foss says
Weaving on the Island does sound like good therapy! Thanks for your lovely comments on reading and feeling the Island and Sievers connection. We love hearing back from you, too!
Teresa Lemcke says
Thank you. I enjoy the updates and pictures very much.
Carolyn Foss says
Thanks, Teresa for being a faithful reader!
Rachel Schwandt says
Lots of great news! Thanks!
Carolyn Foss says
Thanks, and hope to see you soon, Rachel!
Cheena says
Sievers has had a big influence on my life. From the first class, I was hooked. I’ve taken many classes since and each one feels like a luxury cruise to me. I’ve since moved here with my husband and our dog, Ethel. Life IS good!
Carolyn Foss says
Cheena, we LOVE having you full-time on the Island!
Carol McQuinn says
I’m missing the island and Sievers this year, but will be back again next year.
Carolyn Foss says
We’ll miss you this year Carol. We met one of your friends who stopped in a few weeks ago. Take care until 2017!
Marg Spain says
Thanks for the great pictures and updates. I really enjoy keeping up with the goings on at Sievers. Looking forward to coming up again sometime soon!
Carolyn Foss says
We’ll look forward to seeing you, Marg!
Barbara Ille says
Is it true that they put a chocolate shop in the old laundromat?
Carolyn Foss says
I think popcorn and kettle corn. We shall see!
Judy says
I am so glad I am making it to the island this year. So there is NO way to avoid the road construction area?
Carolyn Foss says
You do have to go through downtown Sturgeon Bay…at least until the July 4 weekend. Happily, Sturgeon Bay is such a nice little town!
Missy Kjellenberg says
Love the news you share with us all. Keep it up, thank you. Hope to
visit with you in July with weavers (so few left in our group) from DC,
the mainland. Your pictures are great, year round, keep them coming.
Sorry, I won’t be able to take more classes with you; I had sooo—
much fun all those years.
Missy Kjellenberg says
Forgot: Thank You All, for such a great place to escape to!
Carolyn Foss says
Thank you Missy! We will look forward to seeing the Door County weavers this summer.
