For the fifth year in a row on Washington Island, a Quilts of Valor sewing event was held in the Sophie Studio. Coordinated by Ellen Graf, a total of 26 individuals were involved in the event during the last few days of March and early April. From their hands, ten quilt tops were completed, joined by three quilts that had been finished before the event began. They will be on display at the Washington Island Memorial Day Program before being awarded to recipients known and unknown by the Island makers. The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national non-profit whose mission is to create comforting and healing quilts for service members and veterans touched by war.
It’s the time of the year when so many wonderful things are arriving for the shop. All the beautiful and unique handmade items that are sent from over 100 of our students and teachers (you!), and the so-soft yarns in classic and bright colors, new books and other fun finds are making their way out of the office into the shop. Yes, that is Cindra on the other side of those boxes!
Day by day, we are greeted by more blue skies, more green grass, more buds on the trees and birds in the air.
Just seven more weeks and a group of 12+ quilters will be here for the first class of the season, Open Quilt Studio. We’ll be ready!

Thanks, Renee! We’re still waiting for that first daffodil behind the Sophie Studio to open. A little more sunshine should do it. Happy Spring to you!
