There’ve been sparkles to the east and shuttles to the west this past week with Diane Fitzgerald’s two beadwork classes and Nancy Frantz teaching beginning weaving on a table loom. Tiny seed beads were worked in bead embroidery techniques making a cuff bracelet on the weekend and the following class created jewelry out of two-hole beads. Would you like to do some bead jewelry window shopping? Here’s another reason to make bead jewelry! Sunflowers II was the first place winner in the Crystal Jewelry category at the 2014 Bead & Button BeadDreams international juried competition. Made by Mary Lou Allen, she kindly brought it with her to show in class. The shuttles in the Walter Studio were in the hands of […]
We have color
It could be “Local Color” using natural materials in class with Donna Kallner or bright rainbow colors in Judith Yamamoto’s “Japanese Temari Techniques” from this past week. Of course, we like both! Now, enter the Temari studio. (You can leave your shoes on.) Currently, we have beads and table looms in classes taught by Diane Fitzgerald and Nancy Frantz. We still have color, but have added sparkles and shuttles!
One-of-a-Kind Fashion Show
Some fabrics started as fleece and were spun and dyed first, some were woven with yarns dyed with natural dyes. Some of the fabrics were woven at home, some at Sievers and some were commercial fabrics, but all were part of the fashion show from Mary Sue Fenner’s “One-of-a-Kind Jacket” class last Saturday morning on the boardwalk leading to the Sophie Studio. Garments and fabric of wool, silk, tencel, rayon chenille and cotton were all represented, many with jewelry purchased earlier in the week in the Sievers Shop. Enjoy the show! The time to start planning for next year’s fashion show is…now! Speaking of now, we have Donna Kallner here teaching “Local Color to Wear” and Judith Yamamoto’s “Japanese Temari Techniques” class started this […]
Baskets to carry the Island home
The nine students in Kay Normann and Drew Tibbetts’ Basket Weaving for Beginners class held this week are taking home plenty of new baskets to show friends and family. Whether they’re used for décor, at the table or to store and tote, these baskets will also be carrying a bit of the Island back home with them. Baskets are meant to carry or hold many things. Perhaps they will also hold some of these Island scenes from this week!
Coverlet Weaving + Tablet Weaving + Batik = July at Sievers
This is a four-class post! Students in Rita Hagenbruch’s Friendship Coverlet class not only fostered friendships, but wove overshot blocks for each other. Those blocks will be assembled into coverlets, warming the owners twice: first with the wool and second, with the thoughts of their new weaving friends. Two classes of Tablet Weaving with John Mullarkey discovered all kinds of intricate patterns at their fingertips. John is one of three new instructors this year and we, along with his students, are so happy to have him here, sharing his passion, samples and knowledge of tablet weaving. Would it be summer at Sievers without batik? I don’t think so. The colors of the rainbow and all shades in between soaking […]

All visitors are welcome and all events are open to the public. Here’s what’s waiting for you… Workshops – Three workshops are scheduled during the Gathering. For the first time, two of them are one and one-half day sessions […]
Yes, “B” is for Baskets
Beautiful, bounteous baskets! It has been another wonderful week of basketmaking with friends, led by instructor Jeanette Biederman. I don’t think there’s a contest to see how many baskets can be made in these five days, but if there was, all the students would be winners! Their hands have been busy with reed and handles, sharing good conversation and meals and simply spending time together, making memories.
This time, it’s machine quilting
Our quilting week continued with a three-day class taught by Julie Lambert titled Machine Quilting. Students started by drawing designs on practice pieces and learning the steps of machine quilting. Some brought quilts from home to mark and sew as well. Julie shared so many beautiful samples and offered an added treat with a trunk show of many more of her quilts. Basketry class with Jeanette Biederman is in session until Wednesday and after the holiday weekend, the looms will go up for weaving Friendship Coverlets with Rita Hagenbruch from July 7-12.
