We’ve had a busy start to August with five classes in session during the first ten days of the month. Beadweaving, and then Mixed Media Fiber Jewelry with Francie Broadie, Finding Our Way: A Dyeing Journey with Stephanie Lewis Robertson, Batik with Anne Landre and Coiled Basketry with Lynn Stracka Schuster. Let’s “take five” and see a little of what each class did during their time in the studios. Francie Broadie’s Beadweaving: Lesser Known Stitches class allowed all levels to try beadweaving for the first time or to explore unfamiliar stitches, then in her Mixed Media Fiber Jewelry class, students created one-of-a-kind jewelry using fabric scraps, beads, found objects or pieces of old jewelry, upcycling and combining them in fun […]
One, two, three…it’s August: Part 1
All of a sudden, mid-summer is here. The first half of our classes have flown by! The start of August saw three classes in session, Embroidery: Basics and Beyond followed by Bead Embroidery: Cabochons both with Francie Broadie, and Finding Our Way: A Dyeing Journey taught by Stephanie Robertson. With all the fiber activity during those three classes and dozens of photos between them, we’ve made this a two-part post. In the embroidery class, students learned basic stitches, transferred patterns to fabric and created samplers or worked on their own special designs. The two samplers shown below incorporate each of the stitches learned in class. For the next group of students, Francie put a spin on embroidery by incorporating beads, […]
Three classes: Parts two and three
Following up from our previous post, the final two classes of three, Beads! Glorious Beads! and Embroidery: Basics & Beyond, both taught by Francie Broadie, show the continuation of fiber fun from the first week of August. Some beads stand alone, but in the beadwork class it was all about creating one or more beaded beads each day. Using multiple stitches, students experimented and explored different designs and shapes. A dodecahedron made with beads? Of course! Swapping beading needles and threads for embroidery needles and floss, Francie then welcomed a new group of students to a two-day class in embroidery. It’s been a number of years since we’ve offered a class dedicated to this particular subject. Adding a modern feel […]
Three at a time
We’re back on schedule now with this post which covers three classes held in early August; Beading: Composing Components with Francie Broadie, the Beadwork Alumni Studio and Finding Our Way: A Dyeing Journey with Stephanie Lewis Robertson. We were very happy to welcome Francie and this new class to our 2021 schedule. Francie first came to Sievers in 2009 as a student in a Diane Fitzgerald beadwork class and has gone on to take many more beadwork as well as several fabric printing and dyeing classes here. She taught a workshop at the Sievers Gathering in 2018 and was scheduled to offer Composing Components in 2020. This was another new class that was long overdue! Students worked on creating rings, […]
The Sievers Gathering
We want to share some images from the Sievers Gathering with you, held September 27-29. Starting with two workshops on Thursday afternoon all the way through the “wine-down” on Saturday evening, it was a fun, fiber-filled weekend! In the Bead Embroidery/Kumihimo workshop taught by Francie Broadie, students added bead embroidery around a cabochon and finished their pendant with a kumihimo braid. Geri Rock’s students completed two splint-woven baskets in the day-and-a-half Beginning Basketry workshop. Saturday’s events began with the ever-popular fiber arts garage sale. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped organize all the many items. The garage sale brought in just under $3,600! Some of the proceeds from the garage sale will be shared with the W.I. Rec Center, Trinity Lutheran […]
