Whether the paint was literally drying on paper in Lorrie Grainger Abdo’s Surface Design on Paper class, or, figuratively in Rich Prange’s Chair Caning class (he likes to say that caning is like watching paint dry, grass grow or ice melt), students from both classes went home with the techniques to either repair their own chairs or to continue experimenting with gelatin printing, paste painting and numerous surface design treatments on paper. Put your own feet up and see what else they’ve done this past week! Favorite pieces from the class were made into these flag books with some pages signed by each person in the class. Next, we’ll be on the boardwalk with Mary Sue Fenner’s […]
Fiber friendships
We received a wonderful surprise gift from the Batik class of 2015 and instructors Mary Jo Scandin and Thom Scott after this year’s class introduction. Last year, each of the students and teachers had made a batik panel based on a color challenge that was later assembled, backed and sewn by Thom (he also did the bottom Sievers School of Fiber Arts panel). Now hanging from the beams in the Walter Studio, this is really a gift to all of Sievers – including you! Thank you batik artists for the banner and for your friendship! First class of 2016
We are well into the first class of our 38th season, Open Quilt Studio. Twenty quilters are still sewing on a variety of new and “continuing” projects, including one from a Doreen Speckmann class in 1993! It all started with moving sewing machines, special tabletops, swivel chairs and a quilt frame (not to mention fabrics and threads) into the studios. Let the quilting begin! Something Old, Some Things New
Congratulations, Sophie Studio! Your first class, Weaving for The Home taught by Jean Hutchison, was in session 20 years ago today. (Before the walls and roof were up, snow needed to be shoveled off the concrete floor almost daily.) The time is coming closer for the start of our 38th season! First we will see the Washington Island Art Association artists in the Walter Studio the week of May 23-27 and Class 1, Open Quilt Studio starts at 2pm on Friday, June 3. Ice Music
It was cold enough overnight to make ice on some of the Island’s harbors, including Detroit Harbor. I thought a photo contrasting the ripples on the open water with the thin, clear ice might be interesting, but as soon as I got out of the car, the sound of the ice breaking up on the rocks due to the current underneath caught my attention.

Thanks to the fine folks at 3W Media, new e-mails have been added to the existing list (if you’re receiving this in your e-mail box already, you don’t have to re-subscribe) and going forward, if you change your e-mail, you will be able to enter your new address so you can continue to read the news from Sievers. The blog page layout is still somewhat “under construction”. Other changes will be forthcoming. It’s taken about a week now for the snow to melt from our spring snowstorm. While it was underfoot, it didn’t keep our feathered friends from going about their business and the snow/rain/cold […]
Quilts of Valor 2016
Now in it’s fourth year on Washington Island, these past few days have been set aside to create Quilts of Valor. From their website, “the mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” Seven Washington Island-based “Under Our Wings” teams of coaches and rookies and two remote teams turned to their sewing machines these first days of March along with several individuals who assisted with backings, bindings and presentation cases. Again this year, the quilts will be displayed at the Island’s Memorial Day Program, presented by our American Legion post, before they are awarded to recipients near and far. Ellen Graf has coordinated Quilts of Valor on Washington Island each […]
