As the buds on the trees start to show and the daffodils find the sunny skies of May, some of the seasonal Island businesses start to re-open. There always seems to be a few changes and additions to what’s available for residents and visitors to explore. We are getting ready for our “open daily” day on May 18. Patricia Hewitt and Connie Westbrook have been sharing their excellent skills in retail design while setting out the lovely handmade items, yarns and books in the shop this past week. The Washington Island Art Association will be renting the Walter Studio the week of May 18-22 for its’ Spring Open Workshop and we’ll welcome our first students of the 2015 season on June […]
Hello, blue and green, we’ve missed you!
A beautiful day on the Island is meant to be shared!
Past, Present and Future
Last fall at the Sievers Gathering, one of the events along with the demonstrations, was a “Sit-and-Sew” to make charity quilts. Volunteers guided a number of people sewing strips of fabric onto muslin. Some of these quilts will be given to Kimberley House in Sturgeon Bay, WI. After all the strips were sewn (at the Gathering and beyond), Ann started working on the borders and backs. They are now ready to pass into other hands who will add batting and tie them before they are distributed. Thanks to all of you who were at the Gathering and added your stitches to this project! Spring is arriving here and there, mostly through bird sightings. There’s no snow to speak of, but we still have ice in most […]
Signs of Spring
A Sandhill crane here, a robin there, whitetail deer prints in the soft ground leading up to the sidewalk of the Sievers shop all indicate that we are transitioning into spring. Some shores are ice-free and some are still locked in, at least until the right wind direction comes along. A 10-year plus tradition on the Island has been a St. Patrick’s Day parade. Starting at the Electric Co-op and ending at Karly’s where corned beef and cabbage are served, this year’s parade saw only a few marching participants, but they were heartily cheered on by a good number of parade fans (including the winter Sievers staff). Boxes of new yarns, books and handmade items for the shop are coming in daily and […]
Quilts of Valor 2015
This week, the third Quilts of Valor event is being held on Washington Island in the Sophie Studio, coordinated by Ellen Graf. Teams of coaches and rookies and individual quilters are creating quilts for military servicemembers touched by war. Again this year, there’s one Island “snowbird” team sewing a quilt at the same time in Arizona. Cutting and pressing started this morning and a few stars appeared this afternoon.
Island Winter Views
The Island in winter means a subdued winter palette, quietly matched by the sounds of bird song or the beating of wings overhead, or the creaking of ice expanding and contracting under the sun.
Winter Knitting, Basketry and Weaving
In these first three weeks of February, we’ve had over 250 students register for classes. Wow! We are looking forward to seeing many of you this summer and fall! In the meantime, our last Sievers in Winter classes were in session: Knitting with Sandy De Master and Mary Germain, Splint-Woven Basketry with Jeanette Biederman and Rich Prange, and finishing today, Weaving Workshop with Connie Westbrook. As of yesterday (February 19), Sievers has a presence on Instagram. It’s only one photo so far, but it’s a start as I’m in the “learn-as-we-go” stage. https://instagram.com/sieversschool/ We like having many ways to say “hello from Sievers”!
A Sneak Peek at the 2015 Class Schedule
On Sunday, February 1st, registration will open! On that day, all of the 2015 class descriptions and complete registration information will be on our website, www.sieversschool.com. Until then, you will still see last summer’s classes. Our 2015 cover is a piece of paste-painted paper from a class with Lorrie Grainger Abdo last September. This will also be the cover for our full brochure, mailed out by the end of February. (We want to let you know that Cindra is out of the office on vacation through February 4th. Ann and Carolyn will respond to everyone who registers as quickly and as best as we are able from Monday, February 2nd and on.) Here’s a look at the full class schedule and more… Sievers Class Schedule 2015 Birch […]
