Our third Sievers in Winter class, “Wool never FELT Better” was held January 15- 16, taught by Judith Yamamoto with Phyllis Kirchner as an assistant. New life was found in old sweaters as you can see from the photos of projects made in class. Some of these warm, wooly items might come in handy while outside on frosty winter mornings.
What’s New in 2015
We’re starting 2015 off like last year with below-zero temperatures, but the sewing machines are warmed up this week in a 4-day quilting class taught by Ellen Graf. Intermediate and experienced quilters are working on independent projects and beginners or second year beginners are using a nine-patch or log cabin pattern. Our other Winter at Sievers classes follow next week and into February: Wool Never Felt Better with Judie Yamamoto and Phyllis Kirchner (Jan. 15 & 16), Knitting Retreat with Mary Germain and Sandy De Master (Feb. 4-8 & 5-8) , Basketry with Jeanette Biederman and Rich Prange (Feb. 12-14) and Weaving Workshop with Connie Westbrook (Feb. 16-20). New 2015 Instructors We will welcome five new instructors this year, Janine Bajus (Fair Isle […]
Greetings from Sievers
A few days into what the calendar tells us is winter, we’re experiencing a bit of a warm-up and most of the lovely snowy scenes shown below from last week have given way to the greens and browns underneath. We know it won’t be too long before everything is sparkling white again. Until then… All of us at Sievers, Ann, Butch, Cindra, Carolyn, Barb, Kathleen, Connie, Pat and Stefanie send our best to you, our Sievers family, in the new year.
December Days
Small, unexpected surprises are appearing these first few days of December. A routine trip to the Island Exchange (dump) turns into a unique bird-watching moment. Just down the road from the post office, the first ice has formed on Detroit Harbor. The same is true in Jackson Harbor. Another eagle sighting on Airport Road, across from the vineyard. Two within a week at close range is a nice treat! Checking out the vegetation off the back deck, is a “no-fear deer”. Photo credit: Matt Foss We hope you are looking for small, unexpected surprises, too!

A Little Snow, A Little Cold
The Island has a dusting of snow and it looks like it will stay for a few days with predicted temperatures at the below freezing mark. A sense of quiet is settling in where chickadee wings fluttering from branch to branch might be one of the only sounds you hear in the early morning… …0r a swan making a water landing in Jackson Harbor
The Tell-Tale Art
There are often comments or questions during the season about small items falling between the cracks of the flooring in the Walter Studio. What truths would those items reveal, what stories would they tell? Can you hear them now? “…hark! louder! louder! louder! louder!…tear up the planks!…it is the beating of…” the tell-tale art! On a different seasonal note, it’s quite apparent that October is transitioning into November. Just a week or so ago, the views were still colorful, now we look for color in other ways. November is the month to button up the Sievers Shop, think about Sievers in Winter classes and plan, plan, plan for the 2015 season. (Thanks to Beth B. for […]
Weaving Rugs, Part II: Rag Rugs
With a flourish, we finished our last class of the 2014 season. Deb Sharpee’s Rag Rug Weaving class wove wonderful and colorful rag rugs (one eight-footer!), runners and placemats. From recycled sheets to new batik pre-cut strips, the fabrics shone through in the finished projects. The magic carpet ride lasted all week… An extra special addition to the last week of class was the arrival of willow harvesters Jo Campbell-Amsler, Jacki Bedworth, Donna Kallner and Lee Zieke Lee. Thanks to them, the willow patch is ready for hibernation until next spring. After today, we will miss the sound of students’ footsteps…what we’ll have instead is the sound of the remaining leaves falling on the paths to the studios […]
