Two different styles of handwoven rugs are the last two Sievers classes of the season, Boundweave Rugs with Lynn Schuster and Rag Rug Weaving with Deb Sharpee. This week, the Boundweave students have explored color and design using heavy wool warp and wool rug yarn. All of the rugs have their own story, but this first one has an Island theme where the sheep have jumped over the fence and are making their way through the lavender fields before coming to a stand of trees, guarded by a woodpecker. What a great array of colors and designs! Each walk into the studio was a new “reveal” of pattern and color! The same is true outside as the leaves start […]
Sit and Knit
It’s been a beautiful fall week and weekend with some very appropriate fall season classes, Creative Knitting Retreat with Sandy De Master and Mary Germain and the Bent Willow Chair class with Ken and Michelle Workowski. Besides the actual class sessions, there’s been time to meet at the Red Cup, go to breakfast at Sunset Resort before they close for the season this weekend, eat pancakes at the Fire Department Open House, enjoy a caramel apple at the Farm Museum’s Cider Pressing Party, sit down together for turkey and all the trimmings at the Trinity Lutheran Church’s Harvest Dinner or for Island Pizza in the willow chair class. Wait, are these knitting and rustic furniture classes or “Taste of the Island” classes? As […]
Island Fall Scenes
Day by day, the colors are becoming more brilliant. We haven’t had a lot of blue skies to highlight the leaves, but they’re beautiful even on cloudy or rainy days. Not quite at peak color yet, it’s a joy to see each day’s new palette. Today begins the second Creative Knitting Retreat class with Sandy De Master and Mary Germain. Who knows the projects the students will bring? (We’ll show you in the next posting.)On the weekend, the knitters be joined by Ken and Michelle Workowski teaching the Bent Willow Chair class. We’re looking forward to the fun days ahead!
Fabric, Fashion, Fabulous!
Bringing those three together within a creative group of students was the result of this week’s Garment Construction Intensive class with Daryl Lancaster. Starting with the fabric, many brought their own handwovens. There were also fabrics to piece together to make a single piece plus some red cashmere for good measure. Let the cutting and sewing begin! Time for help along the way… and now, let’s try it on! These smiles reflect happy students in their new “Daryl” jackets. One more word in the series…fantastic!
The 2014 Sievers Gathering
What a wonderful weekend we had! The workshops, Daryl Lancaster’s Friday evening program and the many events on Saturday, all surrounded by the loveliest weather. Seeing all of you who were able to attend the Gathering was the best part. Late Friday afternoon, the “Landscape ‘Painting’ on Fabric” workshop participants had some of their ready-to-frame pieces displayed. Friday evening, after cookies, coffee and cider, Daryl Lancaster presented her program “Parallel Threads that Parallel Life”, sharing her story and how it is incorporated into her garments. On Saturday, the garage sale led off the Gathering events. The total raised at the garage sale was just over $2,300.00. Besides improvements to the barn at Sievers, the proceeds will be shared with the Art and Nature Center and […]
The Sievers Gathering – Day One and a Half
We’ve had a great start to our 18th Gathering weekend! Two workshops, “Landscape ‘Painting’ with Fabric” taught by Susan Hoffmann and “Surface Design on Paper” with Lorrie Grainger Abdo started Thursday afternoon and continue on through Friday afternoon. The groups took time to visit each others’ studios. Come along with us… Each of the nine workshop students are working with the same fabrics, but are able to design their own touches. The Walter Studio was set up with several stations to try different surface design techniques on paper. Jacki Bedworth’s three-hour workshop this afternoon had students leaving with a small Willow Garlic Basket. Garage sale volunteer sorters and organizers were kept busy Thursday and today with […]
Two Classes, Too Fast
Our two classes this week are going by way too fast! The willow basket makers finished a number of small baskets in just two days with the help of Jacki Bedworth. Quite an array of shapes and sizes and colors! In Lorrie Grainger Abdo’s Paste Painting and Paper Mosaics class, the first days were spent painting and now the students are assembling their papers into mosaics and applying them to frames, trays, plaques and more. With all the colors and patterns, you can’t go wrong! How much fun can you have in a few days? There’ll be more in the days ahead as we’re lucky to continue with Lorrie and Jacki, both doing workshops for the […]
Class # 38 Etched Metalwork Jewelry
A new class and instructor at Sievers this past weekend was Etched Metal Jewelry with Kay Rashka. The studio was transformed with tools, equipment and solutions that we haven’t seen before. The results? Well, see for yourself… Safety first! Save these glasses, since they’ll be needed for another class at Sievers with Kay! We have a busy week ahead! Two classes started this afternoon, Willow Basketmaking on a Small Scale with Jacki Bedworth and Paper Mosaics & Paste Painting with Lorrie Abdo. When they finish mid-week, Jacki and Lorrie will be joined by Susan Hoffmann, each teaching a Gathering workshop, followed by all the other planned events for Friday and Saturday. Look for as many posts as possible in the days to […]
