From weaving wearables, table runners and rag rugs to dyeing yarn and fabric, sewing, bookbinding, knitting and quilting, the sixteen ladies here for these four days of Open Studio have been busy working in the studios on their own schedule. Put these photos together for an “Open Studio Sampler!”
Weaving, Spinning, Weaving and Weaving (Baskets)
You certainly can pack a lot of action into four (5-day) classes at Sievers. Sharing September 17 -22 were Robyn Spady with her Exploration in Weaving: Block Party class and Deb Jones with Spinners’ Retreat. Then we continued with Beginning Weaving taught by Nancy Adams with assistant Susan Johnson and Splint Woven Basketry with Jeanette Biederman from September 22 – 27. Four classes, ten days, a lot of learning, a lot of projects and a lot of fun. It’s hard to believe that one month from today will be the last day of our last class. Paper, Paste, Art!
Starting with a blank canvas of paper ready for paste painting, art paste, acrylic paints and texturing tools, students in Lorrie Grainger Abdo’s Paper Mosaics and the Art of Paste Painting class spent a day and a half preparing the colorful and personally designed papers they then used to cut into strips and assemble into paper mosaics. The remainder of the class was spent applying the mosaic paper tiles to frames, decorative items and more. Everyone went home with a lovely stack of papers and mosaics to continue the fun! Every Day is a Holiday
With exciting projects just waiting to be “unwrapped” and memories made during class, it could seem like every day is a holiday at Sievers. For Connie Westbrook’s Holiday Handwovens class, the holidays were especially close at hand with projects inspired for these special times of year. The weaving elves were busy day and night as you can see!
Colors of the Rainbow and the Earth
From the bright colors of the rainbow in Judie Yamamoto’s Weaving the Rainbow class to the muted colors of Midwest botanicals in Donna Kallner’s Natural Color class last week, every color you could imagine was on the loom, in the dye bath or on the line. Exploring color theory and weaving a color sampler along with a project of their own choice kept one group of students busy while the other group harvested and used goldenrod, bracken, barks, black walnut and more to make their own colors in order to dye yarns and fabrics. Knitting on Location
There’s no better title for this post than the actual class title, Knitting on Location, held this past weekend with Carol Anderson and twelve travelling knitters. After getting started in the Walter Studio on Friday afternoon, the class started their Saturday journey around the Island at Sunset Resort where they sat outside after breakfast and knitted for about an hour. Then, it was on to the Red Cup, a stop at The Lavender Shop and the final location of the day, Jackson Harbor, where we ate Danish Mill sandwiches at the picnic table or on the porch of the Fisherman’s Cottage. Quilt Slide Show
Five days of quilting go by too fast! How exciting to see the progress as series of borders began to surround the center blocks of each student’s quilt in Judy Hasheider’s “Let’s Get Surrounded” Medallion Quilt class this past week. One of the students was inspired by the Jackson Star barn quilt block on the dormitory and incorporated that into a border on her quilt. Another combined her stitchery and quilting. One student celebrated her birthday by taking the class (made complete with Sunset Resort homemade coffeecake, a candle and song), two sisters shared a table and quilted together and a group of long-time quilting friends came to spend time and work (is quilting work?) in the Sophie Studio with a treasured instructor. Three Days and Three, Four or Five Baskets
From Friday afternoon until 10:30 this morning, the students in Kay Normann and Drew Tibbetts’ Basket Weaving for Beginners class worked on at least three different styles of basket with an extra one or two if time allowed. The Washington Island Ferry Line crew will instantly recognize “Sievers” when a number of cars full of baskets pull onto the ferry heading home today. Woven through each basket, we hope, are good memories of their time here in class.
