Before the leaves are gone, we want to share some of the views around the Island of the trees, dressed in gold. There could be a photo from every road and path on Washington Island with the same beautiful colors. (That would be a lot of photos!) They came into peak a little later than usual this year and have stayed a little later, too. How lucky we are to be surrounded by beauty in each direction! With strong winds today and more predicted, the colors will soon be blanketing the ground, in preparation for winter. We’ll be sorry to see them go. It’s not all gold, red, brown and orange in October, there are all the colors of […]
Ice Music
It was cold enough overnight to make ice on some of the Island’s harbors, including Detroit Harbor. I thought a photo contrasting the ripples on the open water with the thin, clear ice might be interesting, but as soon as I got out of the car, the sound of the ice breaking up on the rocks due to the current underneath caught my attention.
A new look
As summer fades and the colors of fall start to show, new looks appear. A recent hike on Rock Island gave a glimpse into what is in store for us in the next two months. The trails went through a “forest” of ferns, past the Water Tower and steep views down the bluffs to the water below. Back on Washington Island and specifically at Sievers, there is a new look in the Sophie Studio. With just shy of 20 years on the roof, it was time to make a change, preventing any future problems with ice buildup and rain on and around the skylights. It’s time to enjoy all the new looks that await us […]
Island Winter Views
The Island in winter means a subdued winter palette, quietly matched by the sounds of bird song or the beating of wings overhead, or the creaking of ice expanding and contracting under the sun.
December Days
Small, unexpected surprises are appearing these first few days of December. A routine trip to the Island Exchange (dump) turns into a unique bird-watching moment. Just down the road from the post office, the first ice has formed on Detroit Harbor. The same is true in Jackson Harbor. Another eagle sighting on Airport Road, across from the vineyard. Two within a week at close range is a nice treat! Checking out the vegetation off the back deck, is a “no-fear deer”. Photo credit: Matt Foss We hope you are looking for small, unexpected surprises, too!
The Tell-Tale Art
There are often comments or questions during the season about small items falling between the cracks of the flooring in the Walter Studio. What truths would those items reveal, what stories would they tell? Can you hear them now? “…hark! louder! louder! louder! louder!…tear up the planks!…it is the beating of…” the tell-tale art! On a different seasonal note, it’s quite apparent that October is transitioning into November. Just a week or so ago, the views were still colorful, now we look for color in other ways. November is the month to button up the Sievers Shop, think about Sievers in Winter classes and plan, plan, plan for the 2015 season. (Thanks to Beth B. for […]
Island Fall Scenes
Day by day, the colors are becoming more brilliant. We haven’t had a lot of blue skies to highlight the leaves, but they’re beautiful even on cloudy or rainy days. Not quite at peak color yet, it’s a joy to see each day’s new palette. Today begins the second Creative Knitting Retreat class with Sandy De Master and Mary Germain. Who knows the projects the students will bring? (We’ll show you in the next posting.)On the weekend, the knitters be joined by Ken and Michelle Workowski teaching the Bent Willow Chair class. We’re looking forward to the fun days ahead!
Island flora and fauna
It’s time to share some of the Island roadside nature scenes from this week. Lady slippers are still in bloom and with the warmer temperatures, some of our animal friends are making their way out of the marshes. The garden is especially colorful this spring and we’ve come to the wonderful time when the Siberian iris are in bloom in front of the Walter Studio. The Island is always dressed for the photographer, whether it’s daytime, after a rain or at sunset. These two warm and fuzzy friends… …remind me to bring you more photos (soon) of the spinners in Spinners’ Retreat with Deb Jones and the weavers in Beginning Weaving with Nancy Adams […]
